From Floor-Length to Fabulous:Giving Curtains a Second Life

‍ ‍A fresh look without buying new curtains.
Moving house or refreshing a room doesn't necessarily mean you need to buy new curtains. Sometimes, all it takes is a little careful sewing and a few thoughtful changes to make existing curtains work beautifully in a new space.
At Kiwi Alterations, I recently transformed a pair of floor-to-ceiling curtains with a classic cream and navy stripe. They were lovely curtains, but their original length and traditional goblet-style heading weren't quite right for their new home.
Rather than replacing them, I gave them a new look using the original fabric.

1. Changed the length
The original curtains were floor-to-ceiling length. I carefully cut them down to create shorter pairs, making them much more suitable for the new window.
2. Narrowed the curtains
Each curtain was narrowed to achieve a better fit, with the fabric and proportions adjusted for the window.
3. Updated the heading
The original goblet-style pleats were replaced with a classic pencil pleat heading. This gives the curtains a simpler, neater appearance that feels more at home in a modern interior.
The finished curtains retain the character of the original striped fabric, but the overall look is fresher, more practical and better suited to the room.

‍ ‍ Moving house? Don't leave your curtains behind!
Curtains are often an expensive purchase, and good-quality fabric can have plenty of life left in it even when the dimensions aren't right for your next home.
If you've moved house, inherited curtains or bought pre-owned curtains, it is worth considering whether they can be adapted before you spend money on replacements.
Depending on their construction and condition, curtains can often be:

*Shortened to suit a different window height and narrowed or reworked to achieve a better fit.
*Changed from one heading style to another.
* Reused in a different room or property.
* Refreshed to complement a new decorating scheme.
Not every curtain will be suitable for every alteration, but a quick assessment can help you decide what's possible.
A more sustainable approach to home decorating, upcycling isn't just about furniture and paint. Reusing existing curtains is another simple way to reduce waste and get more value from things you already own.
